I looked in the sky and there it was
Explosions of energy and light streaking across the sky
Straight, sharp bursts
Cut through the wake of swirling sparkles
While a large plume
Arched its twinkling arms over the sky
Enveloping all of us.
I looked in my mind and there it was
Explosions of energy and light clouding my thoughts
The jumble of flame and sound and misguided direction
The overlapping, interrupting, intrusive illuminations
That pull my focus in too many ways
That steal my energy by day’s end
That make my thoughts feel like a fire that won’t be put out
Enveloping all of me
I looked in the sky and there it was
Fireworks bursting in the darkness, piercing the silence
The most fitting image for how it feels
In my head
Every day
“I don’t like when there’s so much at once”
My son said
Me either, my love.
